Review: Dirty Grandpa

Review: Dirty Grandpa

25th February 2016 Off By Daniela Ralu Nastase

A big contrast with De Niro`s last movie (The Intern), Dirty Grandpa shows Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) confronting his childhood impressions of his grandfather and replacing them with unexpected new ones, as he is forced by circumstances to go to jail twice, smoke drugs and rediscover his long-lost passion – photography.

While his nephew acts and dresses like a third-age man, Dick Kelly (Robert de Niro) fulfill his wife`s last wish: “to get back there again” –  as in relive his twenties, do crazy things and follow his heart. In the process, he manages to make Jason rethink his wedding plans with his boss’s controlling daughter, which will earn him a promotion.

With a 6.1 score out of 10 on IMDb and many bad reviews, this film seems to be destined to be a failure. However, I`ve seen the movie twice and the cinema was filled with laughter each time.

The £25M US Box Office seems to confirm that beyond graphic nudity, drug use and “De Niro fall”, fans enjoyed this movie.

You can see Dirty Grandpa at Sunderland Empire, Newcastle Empire Cinema and in Cineworld Middlesbrough.
