Hollywood has produced countless films capturing the disco-fuelled, neon-lit hedonism of the 1970s. American Hustle, Anchorman, Almost Famous, Boogie Nights. This month there’ll be another addition to the list with the release of The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

Gosling plays a hapless private investigator tasked with looking into the apparent suicide of an LA porn star.

Realising the circumstances are shady, he enlists the help of an explosive hired goon (Crowe). Soon, the pair find themselves embroiled in a web of deceit sparked by the disappearance of a girl (Margaret Qualley).

Director Shane Black’s last major crime project was the critically-acclaimed comedic crime caper Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

If KKBB is anything to go by, The Nice Guys promises to be a thrilling yet humorous romp through the disco era. As a side note, Black also directed Iron Man 3 – but don’t expect messers Gosling and Crowe to don shiny metal suits. The Nice Guys is in cinemas from May 20.
