13th February 2017 Off By Stacey McMaster

Valentine’s Day is almost here and we at Northern Lights have come up with a list of the best movies to watch and enjoy for the special day. So get some chocolate, get your feet up, sit back and enjoy.

1.Romeo and Juliet (1996)

Our pair of star-crossed lovers takes centre stage in this year’s valentine’s list. Whether it’s the 1996 version with Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes or the latest 2013 starring Hailee Steinfield and Douglas Booth, they are both classics to enjoy with your special someone.

2.United Kingdom (2016)

Based on a real life romance that defied the odds of their time and still speaks out across even today’s ever changing world. Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) and Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) Prince of Bechuanaland had to defy family, apartheid and the British Empire to be together.

3.The Space Between Us (2017)

This is an out of this world story about trying to find out where you belong with unabashed amounts of mind numbing soppiness for everyone to enjoy. Released this year staring Asa Butterfield as Gardner, a child raised on Mars and Britt Robertson as Tulsa, a street smart girl.

4.Me Before You (2016)

Based on the bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes, this is a movie not to be overlooked on the shelf. Nothing ever turns out the way we plan which this movie demonstrates beautifully.  It stars Emilia Clarke as Louisa Clark and Sam Clafin as Will Traynor and won People’s Choice Award for Favourite Dramatic Movie.

5.La La Land (2016)

This film stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a Jazz musician and aspiring actress who meet and fall in love. An escape from the world is never a bad when times are bleak. The film was nominated for fourteen Oscars and also won in seven categories at the golden globe awards.

7. Dirty Dancing (1987)

The classic which can’t be over looked on our list. The signature song: “I’ve had the time of my life” certainly helped to put in on our board.

It won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies made even more remarkable by the fact that at the time there was no major stars in lead roles.

6. Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001)

With hilarious laughs, tears and moments nearly every girl can relate to, we can certainly say that this is one to watch. Featuring Renée Zellweger as Bridget, Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleave, and Colin Firth as Mark Darcy will have your favourite person say “I like you very much, just as you are”. The third movie released last year of the franchise, Bridget Jones’s Baby, is certainly not one to miss out either.

8.The Notebook (2004)

Based on the 1996 novel by Nicolas Sparks this film has soon become a staple of the romantic diet. It has received several award nominations, winning eight Teen Choice Awards, a Satellite Award and an MTV Movie Award. Not surprisingly as it has a great star cast of Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Joan Allen and James Marsden.

9.Princess Bride (1987)

A romantic fantasy movie that while absolutely adorable is a tale of a man’s, (Cary Elwes) unending love despite impossible odds for a princess, (Robin Wright). A little bit of comedy from our favourite clowns; a sicilian boss named Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), a giant named Fezzik (André the giant), and a Spanish master swordsman named Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) doesn’t hurt either.

10.50 First Dates (2004)

A heart warming tale that proves romance is not dead. It’s a story that shows that even though you may not even remember it love still finds a way to overcome even the worst scenarios in life. It has won BMI Film & TV Awards 2004, Kids’ Choice Awards, USA 2005, Motion Picture Sound Editors, USA 2005, MTV Movie Awards 2004, People’s Choice Awards, USA 2005, and Teen Choice Awards 2004.
