Wicked: Cast Announced For Sunderland Empire Shows
The musical phenomenon, Wicked, has been a huge success around the world since it opened in 2006. The show has sold out on Broadway, The West End and now is coming to the Empire Theatre, Sunderland next year.
The first shows will be on Tuesday 31 March, and the last will take place on Saturday 25 April.
Oh, and the stellar cast for the record-breaking musical has just been announced:
Elphaba will be played by Ashleigh Gray, who has been performing with the Wicked cast since 2007 as a standby for the role and finally playing the lead herself. She has also been on tour with the cast of Boy George’s Taboo, playing the lead of Kim, as well as Lorraine Campbell in the Susan Boyle story – I Dreamed a Dream.
Star of stage and screen Emily Tierney will reprise the role of Glinda, having played the Good Witch on several occasions in Wicked and in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of The Wizard of Oz.
The rest of the cast includes Samuel Edwards as Fiyero, Marilyn Cutts as Madame Morrible, Steven Pinder as The Wizard and Doctor Dillamond, Carina Gillespie as Nessarose, Richard Vincent as Boq and Jacqueline Hughes as standby for Elphaba.
The musical is based on the stories by L. Frank Baum (most famously adapted in to cinema classic The Wizard of Oz) and the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The story follows two students of sorcery who form an unlikely friendship which eventually shapes their destiny as The Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The award-winning musical continues its record-breaking open-ended run at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre making it the 10th longest running show at the West End. The UK and Ireland tour started in September 2013 in Manchester and has already broken box office records.
