One Man Two Guvnors

Even though the festive season is over, Sunderland Empire still has some great performances coming up to wash away those winter blues. With comedies, musicals and some great classic shows, there’s something for everyone over the next two months.

I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue – Thursday 8 January 2015, 7.30pm

The BBC Radio 4 multi award-winning panel show is coming to Sunderland in a one night only event.

The panel will feature featuring Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Barry Cryer and Jeremy Hardy in a live stage version of the award-winning game I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, while Colin Sell provides piano accompaniment. In the chair for this special series of appearances will be the one and only Sandi Toksvig.

Abba Mania – Friday 9 January 2015, 7.30pm

40 years after ABBA won Eurovision, their songs are still some of the most well known. The show celebrates ABBA’s music and is made for old and new fans, with classic songs such as: Mamma Mia, Voulez Vous, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper and many more.

One Night of Elvis – Saturday 17 January 2015, 7.30pm

Europe’s most successful Elvis Presley tribute artist, Lee Memphis King, performs a brand new show for 2015. Celebrating the career of the musical legend and accompanied by his world-class band and large screen projection, Lee brings the electrifying power of Elvis’ performance back to life.

 One Man, Two Guvnors – 20-24 January 2015, various performance times

The award-winning comedy One Man, Two Guvnors comes Sunderland Empire in January for a limited run.

Nicholas Hytner’s production tells the hilarious story of Francis Henshall who, fired from his skiffle band, becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. It has been described as a glorious celebration of British comedy.

Dirty Dancing 27 January – 14 February 2015, various performance times

The UK’s favourite stage production will be making a limited appearance at Sunderland Empire this year. Following its phenomenal run in 2012, the record-breaking show returns to Sunderland Empire for three weeks only.

Seen by millions across the globe, the show tells the classic story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young people from different worlds who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. The show features hit songs including Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me? and the heart stopping (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life!

Dance ‘Til Dawn – 17-21 February 2015, various performance times

Strictly Come Dancing favourites Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace are back with a brand new show Dance ’Til Dawn. After wowing audiences with Midnight Tango, the duo return in a dance show straight from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

In 1940s LA, a romance unfolds between a beautiful starlet and her handsome lover. Dance ’Til Dawn will transport you to a time of elegance with stunning sets, a live band, world class dancers and Vincent and Flavia themselves with their flawless footwork and spellbinding choreography.

The Full Monty – 23 – 28 February 2015, various performance times

In 1997, a British film about six out-of-work Sheffield steelworkers with nothing to lose, took the world by storm. In the stage adaptation of this production, Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar winning writer of the film, has gone all the way with this hilarious and heartfelt adaptation that’s getting standing ovations every night. With songs from the film by Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones, this award-winning production is one huge package of laughs and emotion coming to Sunderland direct from London’s West End.
