Leaving a big boy band hasn’t always worked out for previous pop stars, but former One Direction member Zayn Malik is hoping for success.

Robbie Williams, who left Take That in 1995, proved that a successful solo career is possible when his first single shot to number two in the UK Singles Chart.

However, going it alone hasn’t been so easy for everyone in past years.

When Joe Jonas tested the solo waters with his 2011 album Fastlife, it peaked at a low 99 in the UK Albums Chart.

Malik recently released Pillowtalk, his first single from the album, and it has already topped the iTunes chart in 60 countries since it was released on January 29.

The singer revealed that he has about 17-18 songs likely to make it onto the finish product.

The debut solo album, Mind of Mine, is released March 25 – one year on from quitting the band.
