Malaysian musical play to close annual North East Malaysian Night

9th March 2016 Off By Justin Chew

Mawar is a musical play set to close the annual North East Malaysian Night, organised by the Malaysian societies of universities in the North East, working in collaboration.

The name of the play, Mawar, means ‘rose’ in the Malay language, and it shares the name with the play’s main lead, an inquisitive girl with a positive outlook on life.

The story centres on an upcoming talent competition set in secondary school in the city of Ipoh in Malaysia during the early 2000’s.

Mawar and her singing partner Hafiz are the favourite to win the competition until a newcomer to scene, Farhan, unveils a hidden talent that rivals the duo. Things get complicated as Mawar and Farhan soon find out they could be falling for each other.

Friendships are tested, love blooms, and drama ensures in this upcoming musical.

Curtains go up from 4pm to 6pm on March 13 at the Northumbria Student Union, the Domain, in Newcastle.

Tickets are out on sale now at £9, which also covers refreshments after the performance.
