Behold the Year of the Monkey! Sunderland will celebrate Chinese New Year this weekend.

The city will usher in the New Year with a traditional lion dance and exploding firecrackers at Keel Square on Sunday.

With this being the Year of the Monkey, the public can expect lots of playful activities and maybe some monkey mischief during the event, which will be opened at 1pm by the Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Barry Curran.

Festivities will continue until 5pm. During the afternoon local Chinese businesses will be selling food.

The celebration has been organised by Ian Wong of Asiana Fusion Restaurant and Harry Collinson of Rough Diamond Entertainment and supported by Sunderland Business Improvement District.
