Preview: Africarmen at Dance City11th February 2016
Opera meets dance as Tavaziva Dance Company adapts Georges Bizet’s Carmen.
Originally the opera is set in Spain in the 18th century, yet Africarmen tells the tale of villagers living in a modern day world in Africa that is full of corruption, desire and deceit. Sick of this life, Carmen dreams of escaping it to find a better life.
Tavaziva is established by Zimbabwean-born Bawren Tavaziva. Fusing dance styles, he trains his dancers to articulate the movement language with physicality, grace and technical precision.
The dance piece is accompanied by a new score composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji.
Perhaps actions speaks louder than words as Tavaziva use contemporary ballet and African dance to tell the classic story of love and jealousy.
Africarmen is at Dance City from February 12, 7.30pm and February 13, 8pm.
Tickets are priced from £15.00 and can be bought from the ticket office at 0191 261 0505 or online here.
