7 North East places to pop the question this Valentine’s Day

7 North East places to pop the question this Valentine’s Day

12th February 2016 Off By

It’s that time of year again when the shops and the streets are bursting with love, and every couple competes for the cheesiest way to show that they care. Whether it’s roses, teddies, chocolate or wine (the only true way to a woman’s heart), you can expect an explosion of red and gushings of love this coming Sunday.

But what could be a more romantic gesture on Valentine’s Day than telling that special someone you want to spend the rest of your life with them?

1. For outdoorsy couples: Robin Hood Tree, Hadrian Wall, Northumberland

What better way to start, possibly, the biggest adventure of your life than on a mini adventure. If you and your partner enjoy hiking, walking or being out in the fresh air, take them somewhere scenic – Robin Hood Tree is guaranteed to take their breath away. Don’t forget a picnic basket…and the ring!

About the tree: Featured between two deep crests at Sycamore gap, this iconic tree was once made famous by the film Robin Hood (hence the name). Surrounded by lushous greenery and by some of the nicest views in Northumberland National Park, this location can make two lovers feel like they are the only people in the world – especially, when the sun sets between the ridges. After they’ve said yes there are plenty of country pubs or traditional restaurants to go celebrate. Have a look here.

2. For the relaxed couple: on the beach

In the North East, we are spoilt for choice of beaches, and while sitting on Roker Pier in the recent stormy weather may not be everybody’s idea of romance, there is something quite magical about strolling along the beach with your other half. Don’t let the cold weather put you off, wrap up warm and head to Tynemouth, Druridge Bay or the famous Marsden Grotto, where you can visit the restaurant within the cliff and get warm and cosy again, with a bottle of champagne, or a good hearty ale to celebrate.

3. For the fancy couples: Newcastle Quayside

For those who dream of the fairytale – glamorous proposal but without the parisian budget – why not take advantage of the many beautiful a la carte menus and upmarket eateries that Tyne and Wear has to offer? Make your loved one feel like a royalty before the big event.

Glam up for the evening with a walk along the bright lights of Newcastle Quayside, take in the sights of the Millennium bridge and head up to the infamous Tyne Bridge, where just a stone-throw away, you can enjoy the culinary genius of this michelin star restaurant in a Grade 1 listed building, ran by two-time Great British Menu winner Kenny Atkinson and his wife.

Or head up to the SIX restaurant inside the Baltic for a proposal with a view, and watch the bright lights of the city twinkle as much as the diamond on ring! .

4. For the adventurous couples: Durham hot-air balloon

If you’re a little more daring (and not terrified of heights), why not take to the skies and drift over the beautiful city of Durham on a magical hot-air balloon ride. Toast your engagement over a glass of champagne, 2000ft above the rest of civilisation.

If that isn’t adrenaline fuelled enough, you could act like a couple of big kids and go play in the adult playground in the trees in Maften near Newcastle. Proposing mid-Tarzan swing 500ft in the air would certainly send your hearts-a-racing.

5. For the theatrical couples: The Drifters, Sunderland Empire

If your partner enjoys being lavished with affection and being the centre of attention at all times, you might want to make them the star of the show by proposing in a very public place in a very, very public way.

The smooth silky tones of the The Drifters are the perfect backdrop to a romantic evening. Why not get in touch with Stage Door and ask them to put out a shoutout for your special moment? You may even get a special mention by the legends themselves. Either way, a roomful of people witnessing your special moment is sure to be memorable.

6. For the sporty couples: at a football match

The North East is known for its love for football and has one of the biggest rivalries between cities in the game itself. One thing you can’t deny, though, is the passion for the game and the loyalty of the fans.

Why not put this passion into your proposal by surprising your other half at either the Stadium of Light or St Jame’s Park amongst thousands of fans. Then enjoy a Mexican wave in your honour and head into the city centre to celebrate your win – even if your team has lost.

Sunderland v Man Utd, Saturday 13th February KO: 12:45pm

7. For those couples who just want to get away from it all
