A Series of Unfortunate Events – Series based on Lemony Snicket’s hit story set for Netflix

30th November 2016 Off By Ryan Prentice

For those who are new to this franchise, the series follows the adventures of three orphans who have been placed under the care of their eccentric uncle Count Olaf. The cunning stage-actor plans to steal the fortune that has been left to the children, while they unravel the mystery of their parent’s death.

The trailer reveals that there is a very talented cast that is going to be part of this series. The likes of Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Patrick Warburton (Rules of Engagement), Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage) and Joan Cusack (Toy Story 2) all star. Netflix are showing the power house they can be when it comes to casting, however unfortunately, the children, who are the protagonists, may be overshadowed by other performances.

The tones of Lemony Snicket’s tale are very mixed with dark humour and tense moments, which this new series looks to emulate. Within this trailer there are lots of mature jokes despite it being based on children’s books. Referencing to buying items online that are faulty, the awkward explanation that the children’s parents had “perished in a terrible fire” while the trailer finishes with a mature┬ájoke while Olaf competes to see who has the bigger weapon with another character.

Overall, the trailer is very intriguing and looks like it could be another hit from Netflix. They have gone all out for this and you can tell that from the special effects and casting. However, the worry is that this may not be a hit with the American audience. The humour seems quite dry and sarcastic, perfect for an English audience, but for it to be renewed it will have to be a success in the U.S.

Personally, I am very excited for this and look forward to the full release on the 13 January.
