Kong: Skull Island, the upcoming mythological monster film directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts written by Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstien, is a reboot of the ‘King Kong’ franchise, all while introducing us to the new ‘MonsterVerse’. This is the second film in the new MonsterVerse, set as a prequel to the 2014 film Godzilla.

As the story goes, in 1971 an unknown military organisation known as ‘Monarch’ discovers an island in the South Pacific with unusual activities, which leads them to set out an expedition to discover what is on the island.

Upon arrival, they are greeted by a monstrous ape named ‘Kong’, who shows his dominance over the island against other monstrous apex-predators named ‘Skullcrawlers’ who were responsible for wiping out his kind. As the crew of Monarch try to survive on the island and kill Kong, along with any other predator, they soon come to realise that Kong is worth saving.

Kong is being brought into the universe to give fans the battle they’ve always wanted, Kong vs Godzilla, which is due to release in 2020 just after the second Godzilla solo film.

The new ‘MonsterVerse’ will almost be the same way that DC and Marvel universe work, in which all the films will tie in to one another. There are reportedly four films, including this one, to be released: Kong, Godzilla 2, kong vs Godzilla and Destroy all monsters, however these names are not finalised.

The last King Kong film was released in 2005 and did reasonably well at the box office but that was much darker story, whereas, from what we can tell from the trailers, this new Kong movie seems to show a more comical side to the story, alongside phenomenal CGI, hopefully making it more enjoyable for all audiences.
