Every generation has an album that defines them, and for the teens and punk lover of the early millennium, Green Day’s American Idiot is that album.

The album sold 15 million copies worldwide and was made into a Broadway Musical in 2010. It is now touring the UK, with Newton Faulkner and X-Factor’s Amelia Lily, and is rocking Sunderland’s Empire Theatre 24 – 28 May.

Set in a post 9/11 America, it follows three childhood friends searching for life’s meaning interspersed with songs from the hit album such as St Jimmy, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends, as well as later tracks 21 Guns and an unreleased love song, When It’s Time.

The sets are far from clean and simple, with posters and Graffiti sprayed across every inch of them. The cast are dressed in Punk Rock attire of leather jackets, MoHawks and Spray-On Skinny Jeans with Converse shoes, making American Idiot like no other musical about at the moment.

American Idiot is at Sunderland Empire from 24 – 28 May, with tickets starting from £12.90.
